What is God from the point of view of the Christian Orthodox religion?
Saint Filaret of Moscow in the Expansive Catechism says this in the following way.
84. Is it possible to know the being of God?
The creature of God cannot be known. It is above all knowledge not only of man, but also of angels.
86. What are the attributes of God?
The following concepts about the essence and essential properties of God can be borrowed from the revelation of God: God is the eternal Spirit, all-good, omniscient, all-righteous, omnipotent, omnipresent, unchangeable, omnipotent, all-blissful.
89. Where does God live?
God is everywhere, but in heaven there is His special presence, manifested in eternal glory to blessed spirits; also in the temples there is his special presence, gracious and mysterious, reverently knowable, felt by believers and sometimes present in special signs.
Jesus Christ says: “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20).
90. How to understand the words of the Symbol “I believe in the unity of God the Father”?
The words of the Symbol “I Believe in One God of the Father” should be understood in the sense of relating to the mystery of the Holy Trinity, because God is one in essence but threefold in persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, the Trinity is one and indivisible.
93. Is it possible to comprehend the Trinity of God?
God is one in three. We do not comprehend this inner mystery of the Divine, but we believe in it according to the immutable testimony of the word of God: “No one knows God except the Spirit of God” (1 Cor. 2:11).
94. What is the difference of the faces of the Holy Trinity?
The difference between the persons of the Holy Trinity is that God the Father is not born and does not come from another person; The Son of God is born forever from the Father; The Holy Spirit comes from the Father forever.
95. What are the dignity of persons of the Holy Trinity?
Three hypostases, or persons of the Holy Trinity - absolutely equal Divine dignity. As the Father is the true God, so is the Son the true God, so is the Holy Spirit the true God; but in such a way that in these three persons one tri-hypostatic God is revealed.
96. Why is God called the Almighty?
God is called the Almighty because He is all that is, contains in His power and in His will.
97. Why do we call God the Creator?
The words of the Symbol of Faith, “the Creator of heaven and earth, visible to all and invisible,” indicate that everything was created by God and nothing can be without God.
In the Children's Catechism, Archpriest Maxim Kozlov writes about this as follows.
Who created God?
Nobody made God. God created the world out of nothing - figure out how to create it out of nothing and who can do it, but the Lord was always hard to imagine, you probably can't, and I, too, but it is so.
Where does God live?
Everywhere and nowhere. There is no such hut on chicken legs, there are no such royal chambers, there is no beggar’s hut where the whole Lord would dwell. But there is no such heart of a man into which He could not enter. So - everywhere and nowhere.
I was told that God was always. How can this be, for everything has a beginning?
In all but God. Although not everything has a beginning: the circle, for example, has no beginning or, for example, time, as we see it here, there is neither a beginning nor an end; in many other things you will think about, you suddenly find that neither beginning nor end is found; now you’ll go through Lobachevsky’s geometry, and you’ll find out that there are figures with no beginning or end. So not everything that cannot be imagined is meaningless.
What does God look like?
I will begin to answer this question from the other side. I will tell you how God does not look. God does not look like a gray-haired old man sitting on a cloud, from which the sun shines or rain pours down to Earth. God does not look like it was represented by the ancient pagans: like a crocodile, like a hippopotamus, like Athena Pallas, like the many-armed goddess Kali, and more and more. God does not look like the shamans in the North and the sorcerers in Polynesia think about it. God is not a statue, not an idol, not a block of wood. God is not even the sun or the moon. Even stronger, we say - God is not our whole world. Others look at the earth and think: "Mother of cheese is earth." They look at the starry sky and think: "God is dissolved in the world." And this is not so, because this is the creation of God, this is all created by God, but this is not God himself. So talk about God we are taught by the holy fathers.
There is the Greek expression “the apophatic method of theology,” that is, when we speak of God negatively, that God is not, so that he is not confused with something or someone. This is stated at the beginning of the Gospel of John: “No one has ever seen God; The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared ”(Ch. 1:18).
We can say something about God that the Lord has revealed to us, Jesus Christ - the incarnated son of God, who is also a true man, like you and God.How we see him in icons, as the church tradition narrates about him, so looks like God incarnate.
