The biggest monster truck in the world

The height of the Bigfoot 5 pickup is 4.7 meters, the height of tires is 3 meters, and the weight is 17.236 kg. Bigfoot # 5, built by Bob Chandler, is one of the monster trucks with the biggest wheels in the world. These wheels are used in all-terrain vehicles that roam the expanses of Alaska.

One of these bigfoot is the record holder for the Guinness Book of Records in the nominations "The tallest, widest of the world, and the hardest Monster Truck". Now Bigfoot 5 pickup is on permanent parking in the city of St. Louis and is periodically shown on local festivals.

And let's remember the history of these cars ...

Monster truck could only be born in America - a country where a show or a competition can be made of the unusual. Actually, this is exactly what happened with the first big-feet: the spectacular “suppression” and the destruction of ordinary cars by the SUV with big wheels were so much liked by the avid Americans at the auto show that very soon the new entertainment became a popular spectacle, including both competitions and demonstration performances.

Already the first competition showed that even a seriously modified design of a standard SUV is not able to provide the necessary level of reliability and safety required at the big foot show. And in the end, the monsters came to the logical decision to make their cars not based on standard cars, but, as they say, from scratch - like most other sports cars of the highest class.

The first Bigfoot is officially the car of a resident of St. Louis (Missouri) Bob Chandler. It all started with the banal lack of a sufficient number of stores with spare parts for SUVs. Having founded his small family business, Bob redid the 1974 Ford F-250 pickup truck he had with his first big-wheel drive vehicle, whose main task was to attract customers to the store. At first, the pickup simply received big wheels borrowed from the tractor. Later, Bob came to the desire to make the car also fully manageable. It is this scheme - 4x4x4 - that forms the basis of the majority of modern classical monster tracks.

That Bigfoot # 1 at the International Monster Truck Museum. Its creator, Bob Chandler, is in the center.

Chandler’s public performances began in 1979. But the first public destruction of passenger cars took place only after almost three years. Then, in 1981, Chandler enlisted the support of Ford and fully focused on the development and improvement of the design of big feet in general and the monster truck in particular.

It is curious that Bigfoot number 1 and today is in excellent condition, from time to time demonstrating their abilities at various auto shows.

The production of a professional monster truck begins with the construction of a spatial frame, on which all the remaining components and assemblies will be subsequently installed. Individual parts and the type of frame on different "monsters", of course, have differences, sometimes significant. But in general, any frame is made of special chrome-molybdenum pipes with a diameter of 2-2.5 inches (5-6.35 cm). Its form is calculated on a computer, which allows you to more accurately assess the distribution of loads and make the structure easier. As a result, the weight of the finished frame for the monster truck is about 800 kg.

Spatial frame with engine, transmission and axles mounted on it.Front dual left side shock absorbers are also installed.

By the way, the fight with the weight for monster trucks is not an empty sound: how much can one wheel weigh 1.7 meters in diameter and 1.1 meters wide (this is the standard wheel size for monster tracks today)? Without special relief measures, one such “skating rink” can pull up to 500 kg or even more. After the relief, the bulk of which falls on trimming the tread of standard agricultural 66-inch (!) Tires, the weight of one wheel decreases to about 350 kg. But in this form, only one set of wheels will stretch by almost one and a half tons.

Now imagine that this whole economy needs to be rotated. Accordingly, we need a powerful motor. And here even the huge, by our standards, 5-6-liter engines of American pickups may not be enough. All professional Monster-trucks use engines based on the so-called Big block, with a volume of at least 9-9.5 liters and mechanical superchargers that are used in drag racing. Most of them do not even work on gasoline - on methanol. The power of some specimens exceeds 1500 hp It’s better not to talk about fuel consumption: only one show-ride in front of the stands requires at least 10 liters of fuel. And with intensive overclocking, the consumption can exceed 20 liters per “hundred”.And the "hundred" is not kilometers, but only meters! However, what else to demand from a car weighing about 5-5.5 tons, capable of accelerating to 100 km / h in less than 4-5 seconds?

On most monster trucks, the engine is installed in the base with an offset backward - so less likely to "peck" forward when jumping over obstacles. The shape of the transfer case is due, among other things, to the need to reduce the angles of inclination of the drive shafts

According to the tradition laid down in the first Bigfoot of Chandler, gearboxes use automatic ones. And, like the engines, they are most often borrowed from the dregsters: such units are made by both Allison, and Lenco, and Powerglide ... In fact, this is the usual "cargo" 3-speed automatic transmission with enhanced components and torque converter of a larger size. Other designs KP are rare and while from the category of exotic monster truck do not go.

But back to the design of the monster truck itself. The engine is installed inside the frame at the bottom and in the base. This arrangement ensures optimal weight distribution and lowers the center of gravity of a very high car (on average, the standard, so to speak, Monster-truck has a 4-meter body height). Still, rollovers and coups are not uncommon. Therefore, the space frame itself at the same time forms the protective framework of the cockpit. It is fitted individually fitted sports chair. And in general, there are many solutions and systems that provide security - for example, several forced and automatic ignition switches, a fire extinguishing system, etc.

Cardans reinforced and often doubled - to smooth large angles of inclination of the shafts. Planetary gears reduce the load on the drive and increase ground clearance

The suspension and chassis on monster trucks also use many special solutions. The standard here are except that the bridges, which are still able to withstand high loads when jumping from the springboard or passing on other machines. Part of the levers is made of pipes with increased ductility - to provide additional cushioning qualities. Elastic elements - springs, replaced the previous springs, not able to provide proper suspension travel. And they, by the way, are just fantastically huge: on average, the suspension stroke of a modern monster truck is 60-70 cm, and sometimes even more.Accordingly, special dual shock absorbers are required: of enormous height, filled with nitrogen and with remote oil tanks. Their design and properties are calculated in such a way as to prevent the resonant buildup of the machine and rebounds during landings after jumps.

But this unique solutions in the design of monster trucks do not end there. In particular, it is not found here in the usual places in the wheel hubs of the brake mechanisms: they are installed on the cardan shafts in front of the differentials to reduce the unsprung weight, and often have their own protection from harsh external influences.

Frame, with mounted monster truck units. What is missing is the wheels and body panels.

But it is impossible to manage without planetary gears: although they increase the unsprung masses and reduce the maximum speed, they can reduce the load on the drive shafts, and additionally increase the ground clearance by 100-120 mm. And as for the speed ... Does it really need a bigfoot, which even with rivals chases on a limited area with obstacles?

From this perspective, it is especially clearly seen that the body resembling a pickup truck is a fiction: the basis of the bigfoot, or rather the monster truck, is the spatial frame

One of the main types of monster truck competitions is a parallel race with obstacles in the form of mud puddles, ramps, construction waste and old cars. At the same time, the entertainment of passing the route is often more important than the speed of overcoming them.

There are also separate performances (sometimes they are not part of a competitive, but show programs) in which entertainment comes to the fore. It is here that the bigfoot effectively jumps over the innocent cars, and then (or as a result of an unsuccessful jump) they also crush their own wheels. The driveways along the rows of already crumpled cars on the rear wheels, as well as a 3600around the horizontal axis (the so-called back flip).

Stand apart are record long jumps. So, in September 1999, several monster trucks immediately jumped over a Boeing airliner at an air show in Tennessee. Then the length of each of the jumps was about 60 meters. And in 2011, Dan Rant on a bolide with the name Bigfoot No. 18 made a jump to 219 feet (66.7 meters), thus writing down a new Guinness record in bigfoot jumping.

The steering is also unique here.Monster Trucks has no direct connection between the steering wheel and the wheels: none, not even a cargo one, does not withstand the stresses experienced by the monster truck during stunts, not even the cargo, standard mechanical steering mechanism. As a result, the steering is controlled only by applying pressure to the steering ramp, and only the hydraulics turn the wheels. At the same time, not only the front wheels, but also the rear wheels were made manageable - naturally, not to facilitate parking, but only to improve maneuverability on the show floor. In this case, the driver can optionally disable the steering mechanism of the rear wheels.

For transportation, monster trucks can put shoes on such “small” wheels.

Finally, it is crowned with all this technical splendor (or a perversion - as someone) body, giving a big car the appearance of a regular car - usually an SUV-pickup, less often a sedan, minivan or even a coupe. The standard body, for obvious reasons, is no longer put here: only imitation is used on monster trucks — external fiberglass panels giving the appearance of a production car (the weight of this kit usually does not exceed 100 kg).But in essence, there is nothing in common except external resemblance (and even that is often conditional) with standard pickups: Monster-truck is a specially specialized racing or show-car - the same as race cars for Nascar, WRC, WTCC, DTM and t .P. Perhaps, this is why there are no such monsters in Russia, with rare exceptions, because from a household point of view they are the top of impracticability: the absence of at least some comfort, the ability to carry passengers or cargo, and even with horse-like fuel consumption multiplied by the prohibition to move on public roads, making them the sole purpose of exclusively participating in specialized competitions and shows. Which in Russia is not.

On average, one Monster-truck is:

- Up to 4 meters wide and the same in height.

- up to 5-5.5 tons curb weight

- up to 350 kg of the mass of one wheel with a diameter of 167 cm and more

- up to 1500 hp and more engine power

- fuel consumption up to 20 liters per 100 meters

- acceleration equivalent to 0-100 km / h acceleration in less than 4-5 seconds

- maximum speed up to 120 km / h

- the ability to make jumps at a distance of over 60 meters

- ability to keep overloads on landing up to 4g and more

- the cost of construction is 150-250 thousand dollars

- the cost of a set of wheels 7-12,5 thousand dollars

- the cost of annual content of up to 500 thousand
