Political science - examples from practice

The word "political science" appeared in our language relatively recently. We all know: this is science. But what is she studying? What methods does it use and where is it used in practice? We decided to answer these questions in our article.

Political science as a science

The object of political science- politics in all its manifestations: power relations, government, political organization of the state, interaction of a person and society. In other words, political science explores and reveals the laws and laws on which political power is based.

Political power

For example, the origins of the class struggle and the ways of its development, the construction of the relationship between the elect and the voters, the manipulation of the mass consciousness - all this is the object of study of political scientists.

History of political science

The emergence of this science dates back to antiquity. The first who laid the foundations of political science was the ancient Greek thinker Aristotle. In the Middle Ages, Thomas Aquinas picked up the baton of the philosophers of Hellas, and later, in the Renaissance,Political issues were the subject of research by Niccolò Machiavelli, who, by the way, was the first to question the postulate of the divine origin of royal power.

Niccolo Machiavelli

It is now we know that the monarch is the same person as everyone else, just his ancestors were more dexterous political manipulators, so they ended up on the throne. And in those days, the king and the emperor were considered the vicar of God on earth, and to go against their power was tantamount to violating the will of the Most High.

John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Voltaire, Karl Marx, Herbert Spencer and Karl Raimund Popper contributed to the development of political science at different times.

Methods and functions of political science

The concept of political scienceclosely intertwined with philosophy, sociology and logic, which is reflected in its methods. They are divided into two large groups:

General logic

The methods used in the social sciences, which include political science:

  • analysis and synthesis. Analysis is the way when you decompose the whole into its components, synthesis is the opposite;

For example, you have the task to organize elections, you need to paint the stages of their conduct and the tools that you have to use. In this case, we are dealing with analysis.When they tell you: you have 2 months to make Mayor N, while you have media support for three TV channels and two radio stations, three people are appointed as assistants and funding in the amount of $ 100 thousand is allocated - and you start building tactics action. In this case, we are dealing with a method of synthesis.

Election campaign

  • deduction and induction. He who is familiar with the work of Arthur Conan Doyle knows: deduction is a method of logical thinking that allows you to create a logical chain from the general to the particular. Induction is the reverse process;
  • analogy. The method of comparison, which makes it possible, on the basis of the similarity of certain processes and phenomena, to identify patterns, on the basis of which they can work out laws and predict the development of events;

For example, this method can be used in the study of class struggle in the capitalist industrial and post-industrial societies.

  • modeling. Political scientists are able to simulate situations, tracking in practice their development under different scenarios. In this way, it is possible to calculate, say, what will be the result of popular discontent with an increase in the retirement age or a jump in prices for utility services;
  • classification. Without systematization, knowledge remains scattered.Political science summarizes the accumulated information, simplifying its perception. Examples of classifications are the division of society into social strata, the isolation of the stages of the historical development of mankind, the delimitation of parties and political trends, etc .;

Segmentation and classification

  • abstraction. The transition from concrete examples to theory allows us to work out the laws according to which society and the state live and develop;
  • a combination of two types of analysis: historical and logical. History provides concrete examples, logic suggests further developments in the future;
  • thought experiment. Not all experiments can be carried out in practice, in such cases it is necessary to use only the capabilities of the human brain.

Empirical

Methods based on experience. These include statistical studies, documentary analysis, a sociological survey, laboratory experiments and analysis conducted with the help of IT-technologies.

Political science functions

The functions of political science include:

  • assessment of political actions and events, participation in the formation of the system of values of society;
  • the creation of methodologies by which studies of political events and phenomena are conducted;
  • helping members of society understand the current political processes;
  • the formation of people's motives in order to force them to the necessary actions;
  • development of a theoretical basis for political reform;
  • forecasting developments in political life.

Impact on the consciousness of the masses

In addition to the above,political sciencehelps to solve social conflicts and build a structure of power that represents the interests of all segments of the population.

Modern Political Science

In modern society, political science has proven to be most in demand. It gives those in power the tools to influence public opinion, changing it in their favor.

Where is political science used in practice? Any election campaign is the result of the use of political technologies. The creation of a lobby in parliament, which defends the interests of certain politicians and financial-industrial groups, is also an example of using political science in business.

Manipulation of voters

Modern Western political science deals with the following problems: the study of the psychology of the voter, the mechanisms of public opinion formation, the existence of bureaucracy in the state, the influence of power on political decision-making.Western political scientists, not bound by the dogmas of a single ideology, were able to make significant progress in resolving these issues.

Russian scientists were less fortunate: for 70 years they were forced to consider all the issues of the political system only through the prism of the teachings of Marx and Lenin. And only with the collapse of the USSR, Russian political science began to actively develop, engaging in the study of the theory of politics, in-depth analysis of ideological trends and the search for the optimal model of political structure.
