House on the rock
The first house on a cliff, on the ocean shore of San Francisco, was built in 1858. It was restored as many as five times for various reasons, including for the purpose of modernization and restoration. In 1894, the third, and most photographed, house of the mountain engineer Adolf Sutro appeared on the rock. Sutro built a seven-story Victorian mansion that was breathtaking.
The house on the rock was mentioned in many historical events, including several shipwrecks. In one case, a shipwreck caused damage to the house itself when in 1887 dynamite exploded on a stranded ship. The house experienced an earthquake that occurred in San Francisco in 1906 with minor damage, but the following year it burned down completely. In 1908, the daughter of Adolph Sutro began construction of a new building, but on a smaller scale. So you can see it today.
