Confronting demonic forces is one of the main themes in the works of the holy fathers

It is better to have an enemy in the devil than a lord

St. Prosper Aquitaine (V century)

In everyday life, while all is well, we do not often think about the existence and action of spiritual entities, which Church Tradition calls Angels and demons. The more contrasting are the creations of the saints, which are simply replete with descriptions of the devil's actions in our world, his constant attacks on man.

Temptation of christ

It is possible, of course, to attribute this aspect of the creative work of the ancient fathers to the specific perception of the world inherent in antiquity as a world inhabited by evil and good spiritual beings whom they so loved to describe and classify in the Middle Ages. And the same tendency among modern and close in time to us saints to consider a tribute to the tradition and conservatism of the Church.

However, the patristic teachings,Of course, often clothed with images of their time, bearing the imprint of the ideas of this time, they are characterized by brevity, uniformity and, if one may say so, rigorous functionality, that is, a focus on specific methods of countering demonic forces.

That is why, along with the abundance of descriptions of actions of demonic entities, we find very few stories about Angels among the holy fathers. Angels help us, and absolutely no need to know exactly how. Demons are our enemies, and in order to resist temptation, it is necessary to know their methods of struggle.

The Holy Tradition of the Church keeps the story of events that occurred in the angelic world before the creation of the universe. Then the most gifted and powerful of the angels - Daynatch, in a fit of pride and envy of the Creator, rebelled against God and fell away from the bright Angelic world.

Together with the angels that followed him, Daynatch forms a kingdom, as it were, the opposite of the Kingdom of God (not according to its strength, there are, of course, no rivals for God, but according to proud designs). Since then, the devil has been trying to find support in this world, parasitizing on the being created by God.

From the day of the creation of people, the devil is trying to penetrate into the soul of each person, and through him - into all of creation and thus find a way of being, win back a part of God's territory for himself. And sometimes he does it.

The Temptation of Christ - Botticelli

The holy fathers taught about this, arguing that it is we, the people, who are inclined to sin, give demons the opportunity to exist and manifest themselves in the world. It is our fault that the devil rules this world, that there is so much demonism and suffering in our lives, because, according to Anthony the Great, the demons themselves do not have a body, but ... we become bodies for them, accepting thoughts from them.

The biblical account of the Fall reveals this eternal mechanism for the devil to enter the world. The person turns away from the Creator, breaks the connection with Him and turns to the devil. And after the person and all the creature is at the disposal of evil forces, because, being unconscious, it is unable to itself go back to the Creator without the help of a person. The Apostle Paul wrote: “the creature submitted to vanity not voluntarily, but by the will of the one who conquered it ...”

A man called to build the whole world behind him to God, again and again becomes the gate to the world for the devil. The devil tempts every person, but most people, voluntarily or involuntarily, choose the easy way of indulging, compromising with evil, and therefore do not feel the reality of Satan - personal evil will, opposing every good deed. The saints, having entered into the struggle against the devil, learned from personal experience the reality of the dark forces, and therefore pay so much attention to this issue.

Each person has a choice: whether to be like the hands of the devil, acting through him in the world, - or a co-worker, an employee of God. Without our participation, the devil cannot invade the world (in this is the deep secret of free will), and therefore only depends on us whether evil or good will prevail in the world.

For the most part, we, of course, are a kind of middle option: in some way we are with God, and in some we serve evil forces.

But the balance in our case cannot last long, and a person either becomes more a conductor of demonic forces, even an obsession, or takes the path of more or less active opposition to evil. The Holy Fathers examine in detail the process of our infection with sin, the enslavement of the devil, and offer means for healing.
