Can wearing a corset do any harm?
The use of a corset allows women to become more attractive: their figures look slimmer and fitter.
True, more recently, this necessary attribute "ladies from society" caused them quite understandable headache: the proposed designs were very inconvenient.
Travel corset around the world
The corset, as a subject of women's toilets, was modified in accordance with the ideas of “local couturiers” practically every epoch.
For example, for almost two centuries French designers offered ladies open dresses with a rather frank cut.
At the same time, it was originally envisaged that the line of corsage supporting the chest offered it for public viewing.
For the first time such an extravagant outfit was put on by one of the favorites of King Charles XVII - the incomparable Agnes Sorel. The beauty of this woman made a huge impression on the artist Jean Fouquet, who used her image to write the nursing mother of God.
This was the reason for the fact that almost all the ladies of the court began to appear on the "social events" with almost one breast open.
And about 100 years later, Maria Medici brought the cult of sensuality almost to the limit — her court ladies almost completely exposed their breasts with the help of two round cuts.
As for the idea itself, the first prototypes of the corsets were discovered in ancient Greece.
In particular, local women of fashion used ribbons that tightly wrapped their torso to avoid excessive breast growth. True, these were more than modest desires compared with the court French women trying to make just the opposite impression.
By the way, neighboring Spain at that time was notable for its commitment to puritanism. The strictness of morals dictated to hide all women's charms behind wooden or even steel “armor”. Such a corset was a high and very rigid construction that gave women a lot of inconvenience — the liver and kidneys were squeezed, the stomach was displaced, the general blood circulation was disturbed.
But despite this, the ladies of the world patiently demolished all these torments, trying to pull the waist up with the help of laces to 40 cm that were unthinkable for most of them. Such sacrifices in the name of fashion even led to death.
In France of the 17th century, sensuality was considered exclusively the privilege of the nobles, and only their female half could use corsages, which became the definition of social status.
The first official standard, which provides for a waist size of 13 inches (this is about 33 cm!), Is connected with the Catherine Medici board. The court lady, who does not fit into these parameters, simply did not have the right to appear before the queen. But the use of a corset that allows you to appear in a "decent form" was considered the privilege of high-ranking persons.
In the 18th century, almost throughout Europe, the corset became very common. Husbands considered him almost a “chastity belt”, since the cords reached a length of several meters, and only a specially appointed servant could cope with them. It is believed that this piece of toilet even in some way restrained the rampant moral liberty characteristic of this era.
One of the ideals of female beauty in Europe of the 17th century was an ideal posture, which was achieved through the use of a whalebone in a corset.
Flexible properties allowed to make the female figure more elegant, so it is not surprising that, seeing a significant difference, many women began to wear it almost constantly. This applied to both the ladies of high society and their servants.
Girls tried on a corset for the first time when they were seven years old, and at sixteen they were already putting on hard constructions, which could only be freed from the constant wearing at the sixth month of pregnancy.
As a result, the canons of beauty of that time brought it to the point of absurdity — even at night the girls could not free themselves from the close embrace of a special night “shirt”.
Wore this attribute of clothing and men - kings, dandies and warriors. It was made of leather or steel. Closing the torso from neck to hips, for the military such armor was used as additional protection.
At the same time, he allowed to hide such defects as a stoop or a protruding tummy. This allowed them to avoid both ridicule and to have an extra vest when meeting with enemies.
In terms of medicine
The invention of the X-ray apparatus, by means of which the ribs of both aristocrats with a proud posture, and commoners were investigated, literally shocked.
Classic corsets were called almost enemies number one.
At the same time, physicians began to create special orthopedic models.
With their help, you can maintain the internal organs in a certain position, as well as reduce the load on certain parts of the spine when it is injured or ill.
Today, in the manufacture of corsets used the most modern materials, allowing to speak about a certain ease of their use. The most popular (the so-called graces) are made of well-breathing or lace fabric and suggest a soft correction of the figure. And while they are completely invisible to others.
Modern fasteners located in the front, will easily cope with this design on their own. And the possibility of attaching a special belt for stockings will make it possible to introduce a certain variety into the personal life of the owner of the corset.
However, lovers of the classics can also use models with traditional lacing, as well as with a high back. Using such a corset creates the feeling that a person is sitting in a chair with a stiff, high back. Especially effective is their use in diseases such as osteochondrosis.
