AT . Man is created as an image of God in this world, he is called to support and protect him ... And, perhaps, the main feature that likens a person to God is freedom of choice. His behavior is not determined by the reflexes and external stimuli, as in animals, he chooses one of several possible behaviors. By creating a being with free will, God took the risk: this will can turn against His own will. So it happened.
The book of Genesis describes this story in a mythological language. Among all the trees of heaven, only one was forbidden to man, and the Bible calls it the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Indeed, free will implies that a person can independently, not relying on God, establish what will be good for him and what will be evil for him. Probably, this is exactly what the story of the forbidden fruits from this tree implies, which, according to the serpent’s suggestion, was eaten by Eve, and then treated them to Adam (by the way, nothing in the Bible indicates a specific fruit, such as apples).
We can not accurately establish how this event looked like in reality. Maybe there really was some kind of wood mixed up here, or maybe it’s a poetic image. But the story of this first fall as if in a drop of water reflects the history of millions of other fall ... Look at it.
At the moment when Adam is not around, when there is no one to prompt and protect from a rash step, Eve begins to tempt a certain serpent, which is "more cunning than all the beasts of the field." Who is it? The book of Genesis does not give any answer, but in later biblical books, especially in the New Testament, we will find a complete portrait of this creature. The Bible recognizes that there are intelligent and disembodied spirits in the world, also endowed with free will. Some of them chose to obey God, others rebelled against Him even before such a question arose before a man. The head of the rebels of the Old Testament calls Satan, that is, the enemy, and the New Testament - the devil, that is a liar.
He is depicted here as a snake. The liar begins with a lie, trying to expose God to a ruthless despot: “Did God truly say:“ Do not eat from any tree in paradise ”?” He asks Eve.She immediately refutes the words of the snake, but ... and she adds something from herself to the command of God: "Only the fruit of the tree, which is among heaven, said God, do not eat or touch them so that you will not die." After all, in fact, the prohibition to touch the fruit was not. And the serpent continues his attack: “No, you will not die, but God knows that on the day on which you taste them your eyes will open, and you will be like gods knowing good and evil.” Here he is, the temptation to become like God through his own efforts, by taking a miracle cure ... Until now, she had enough of other fruits, but now it is these that have become much desired, “and she ate her fruits and eaten; and she also gave to her husband, and he ate. "
The eyes of the first people really opened. But instead of seeing themselves as cunning (in Hebrew, this word sounds like Arumim), they found that they are naked (in Hebrew, Eirum, almost the same thing, but who cares!). The innocent nudity of infancy, in which they remained until then, turned out to be incompatible with such a "knowledge of good and evil." Now they knew something about themselves that made them hide.
The Bible describes how God in the garden calls Adam: “Adam, where are you?” Perhaps he was not just interested in Adam’s location,but appealed to him: think in what position you now find yourself, and turn to Me! Adam replies: "I heard Your voice in Paradise, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I disappeared." Until now, he communicated freely with God, but now the voice of God causes shame and fear in him.
Then God asks directly: “Who told you that you are naked? did you not eat from the tree from which I forbade you to eat? ”Adam admits the fact, but he, of course, is not guilty of anything:“ the wife you gave me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate. ” However, my wife has someone to shift the responsibility: "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."
Repentance did not take place, and then comes the punishment. God curses the serpent and talks about the war, which will henceforth be between him and the human race: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; it will hit you in the head, and you will sting his heel. " This is where it went: “the enemy of the human race” as the definition of Satan.
Punishment of a woman is the sickness of pregnancy and childbirth, as well as an irresistible desire for a man who will dominate her. The punishment to the man himself is a hard and unproductive work: “you will eat bread in the sweat of your face”.From now on, the trees of the Garden of Eden will not give food to man, and instead of free creative labor he will have a harsh struggle for existence. Especially bitingly, these words should have sounded in a world where they did not eat their fill every day, and where the main agricultural tool was a simple hoe. Before the advent of office workers remained millennia.
But most importantly, people are now subject to death. No, they did not die immediately - and they, and their descendants, according to the testimony of the Book of Genesis, lived incredibly long (Adam, for example, 930 years), but now, far from God and from paradise, their dying begins. Theologians of the next centuries will argue about how and why the sin of Adam and Eve was passed on to subsequent generations of people. The Bible does not explain this mechanism, but only confirms: yes, since then people periodically choose disobedience to God. The history of the fall is not just a fact of the distant past, it is repeated constantly in our lives.
Before driving people out of paradise, God puts them in "leather clothes." It is possible that here we have in mind not clothes in our understanding, but our present bodies. If so, then Eden was located in a completely different world, and man entered this world after the Fall.The world in which we live, from the very beginning, was filled with suffering and death. His destiny is inseparably connected with the very free will with which God has bestowed man, and once this world must be redeemed and restored to Eden dignity. How exactly - this is already discussed in the New Testament, but a long road of trial and error, which we call the Holy History today, was coming to it, and the book of Genesis is only its very beginning.
